Finding healthy seafood picks!

Updated: Apr 23, 2020

Choosing fish that are richest in healthy omega-3 fatty acids, lowest in mercury contaminant is important but knowing the source of your fish is vital to your health.

According to EWG, Salmon, Atlantic mackerel, sardines, rainbow trout and mussels are the best sustainable sources of omega-3 and the least amount of mercury followed by oysters, pollock and herring as second best choices

Fish to avoid according to EWG with high mercury levels are orange roughy, marlin, shark, tile fish, king mackerel and swordfish

It's Important To Support Sustainable Seafood

The U.S. National Academy of Sciences reported that “human actions have caused drastic reductions in many of the preferred species of edible fish and that man-made changes (created most by long line factory trawling ships) have reduced the composition and abundance of marine animals and plants extensively enough to endanger the functioning of our entire marine ecosystem.”.

Creating Sustainability Helps Our Planet

Sea farming advances in production technologies related to genetic improvements, feeds, aeration, sea cage systems, and new strategies to control disease have lead GMIT to an opportunity to farm fast growing Gulf marine seafood like Cobia, Mahi-Mahi , Red Porgy and shrimp in large, offshore sea cages.

Why This Issue Matters!

The health and stability of our oceans is threatened by warming, acidification, sea level rise, pollution and the overuse of marine resources. Fisheries and aquaculture contribute nutrition, income, and livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people around the world–but at a high cost to marine ecosystems. Fish is one of the most-traded food commodities worldwide. Trawl and drift nets indiscriminately entangle even non-target marine life, posing a serious threat to ocean ecosystems.

Fish stocks are being overharvested globally at biologically unsustainable levels.

Companies like OPS are trying to make a difference. Together we can all reduce our fisheries footprint, one person at a time.. Banning fishing methods, such as bottom trawling and drift net fisheries which destroy delicate seabed communities and ensnare and kill non-target fish such as dolphins, whales and other marine life.
